A native of Syracuse, New York, Mary Ellen McLaughlin studied Fine Art at Munson-Williams-Proctor in Utica, New York and Fine Art and Graphic Arts and Design at the School of Visual Arts, Manhattan. She worked as a graphic artist in New York and a free-lance graphic artist in Central New York.

A 20+-year moratorium of her study and pursuit of art was ended when she moved to Savannah, Georgia with her husband, Peter Rowe. With more personal time, she has renewed her long-retired interest in painting and drawing.

She derives her inspiration from the architecture of the Savannah Historic District, the familiar objects that surround her throughout her home, and the array of plants and flowers found in her Wilmington Island garden.

Mary Ellen holds Signature Memberships in both the Georgia Watercolor Society and the Southern Watercolor Society and is a member of the National Watercolor Society. She was selected for the Georgia Watercolor Society’s 2003 and 2004 , 2007, 2008 and 2009 National Exhibitions, received second place at their 2003 Member’s Exhibition and received The GA Resident Award at the GWS 2007 Members Exhibition. Mary Ellen was a Finalist Winner of the 20th and 24th Annual Art Competition of The Artist’s Magazine. As a member of the Southern Watercolor Society she has been selected for their 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 Southern Watercolor Society Exhibitions. Her painting Cherries Jubilee II was accepted by the Salmagundi Club in Manhattan in 2010 for their Annual Non Members Exhibition.
