Artist’s Statement

In today’s complex and changing world, I strive to document and explore the many objects that are found in my day-to-day life. I derive a great deal of joy and satisfaction from the simple, familiar objects that surround me throughout my home and garden. I find that a teacup, an apple, the fold of a piece of cloth or a sunlit flower blossom can greatly excite me. I strive to express ways to convey that excitement. I am enthralled by the play of light on these things. The patterns that shadows and cast-shadows create have always intrigued me. I infuse my subjects with drama by heightening the relationship of light and shadow. I arrange the placement of objects, the lighting and point of view to express a range of emotions from a peaceful calm to tension and intrigue. The endless supply of subject matter and drama affords a continuous challenge and sense of satisfaction to me as an artist.  Because of my busy work schedule, I find myself working at various hours of the day and night. Therefore, I work mostly from photographs, but sketch from the “moment” whenever possible. I find that the sketching process helps me to truly explore my subject matter and better understand it. To infuse my pieces with a glow of light, I apply several layers of transparent watercolors. It is a process that takes a great deal of thought and time, but I find it to be very calming and deeply satisfying to my creative urge. I hope that my work will instill an appreciation for the beauty found in the simple things that surround us all in our every day lives.
